ABOUT THE BUILDING

The Bank of Commerce Building is a two-storey, red-brick commercial structure located at the corner of 24th Street (Main Street) and 2nd Avenue in Fort Macleod’s historic district. Notable for its triangular lot, limestone entryway, arched pediment, and ghost lettering reading “Canadian Bank of Commerce,” it reflects the early 1900s commercial development of the area. Built in 1910, the building symbolizes the town’s growth as businesses, schools, banks, and hospitals expanded, particularly after prosperity shifted to the south of the Old Man River. The Canadian Bank of Commerce opened a branch in Fort Macleod in 1905, continuing the legacy of the Cowdry Brothers, who had established the area’s first bank in the 1880s.
